The modern Poltava

info
The history of Poltava leaves in a deep antiquity. 1174 is considered to be the year of the foundation of Poltava when the
settlement "Ltava" or "Oltava" is mentioned in the written
sources. They say that the city received
its name from the inflow of Vorskla - the river Ltava or Oltava, where the settlement was situated.
In the beginning of 15th century a settlement appears with the modern name - Poltava. In 1641 Poltava was named as a city.

The cultural life of the city was always very rich. In 1818-1819 the famous writer M.V.Gogol studied in
local college. The
writer M.Staritskiy, the historian and public figure M.P.Dragomanov, the mathematician V.M. Ostrogradckiy have been studied
in the high school of Poltava.
In 1844 the famous Ukrainian poet Taras Schevchenko has visited the city. The famous Ukrainian poet and writer
Kotlyrevskiy was born in Poltava.
In 1865-1866 the Ukrainian writer Nechuj-Levitskiy has been worked here and in 1871 Panas Mirny has worked here too.
Besides, the famous scientist Dokuchaev have worked here too. In 1891 under the initiative of Dokuchaev
the museum of local lore was opened in Poltava. The famous doctor Sklifosofsky worked in Poltava too.

Glorified by many cultural people, Poltava has given to the world a lot of talented and famous people. From here to all
over the world has sounded the voice of Ivan Kotlyarevsky, here studied famous
ukrainian writer Gogol, lived and worked Panas Mirny, Myasoedov,
Makarenko, Korolenko.
The singer and poetess Marusya Churay was born in Poltava, one of the leaders of the Ukrainian National Republic
S.V.Petlura, honoured artist USSR V.M.Batutin.
T.G.Shevchenko, V.A.Zukovsky, K.D.Bal'mont, L.M.Tolstoy, M.P.Bazhan, P.G.Tichina, Ostap Vishnya, Maksim Gorkiy, Repin, the
earl Potemkin, field-marshal Suvorov, the Russian sovereigns such as Ekaterina the second, Nicolay the second, Alexandr the
second; and a lot of other famous people have visited our city.

The city is situated on the right bank of Vorskla River, the inflow of Dnepr River. The climate is temperate continental.
The winter is rather soft with the weak frosts and frequent thaws. The average temperature in January, according to the long-term supervisions is
6,8 C. The summer is warm and dry. July is the hottest month with the average temperature about
20,9 C.
The winds of the east and south-eastward are predominant. The rainfall is about 484 mm a year, which allots in the quite a
regular intervals on the months.
The large forestland of deciduous and pine woods approach to the city from the different sides, forming almost closed ring.

The important transport highways are gathered in Poltava. The railway ways are pulled to the east in the direction to
Kharkov and to Moscow, to the west to Kiev, to the south - to Odessa and Crimea. Here is the highway Poltava - Kishenev
started, the line Kiev-Kharkov is passed
near the
city. The distance up to Moscow is about 924km, to Kiev it is about 333km. There is
direct bus and railway connection
with all the biggest cities of Ukraine.
The population of Poltava is about 314,9 thousands of people, 145
thousand of men live here and 169.9 thousands of women.
Poltava is famous by its unique water and curative mineral sources.
There are a lot of historical and cultural monuments in the city, the places of rest, quite and cozy parkways and squares:

- The park of Glory, cultural and rest Park called "Victory", the birch park etc.
